Andrew's Research Report

The Devastating Winter at Valley Forge

George Washington and his troops marched to Valley Forge the winter of 1777, and stayed there thru June of 1778.

It was terribly cold. They had a low amount of food. Their feet were so cold their blood made foot prints in the snow. Sometimes, they even ate the leather off their shoes. The troops had very little clothing. General Marquis de Lafayette said, “The unfortunate soldiers were in want of everything. They had neither coats nor hats nor shirts nor shoes. Their feet froze until they were black, and it was often necessary to amputate them.” They lived on only salt and pork and about twenty-five hundred men died when they were there.

The winter was considered moderate but since they barely had clothes it was like going outside to make a snow man in a short sleeved shirt. They did not freeze at Valley Forge all winter because they built huts to keep warm. Twelve men were in each hut.

The winter at Valley Forge was a hard time for George Washington and his troops but they trusted in God and He helped them.

Today Valley Forge is a national park with bird walks and hikes.
Archaeologists have found stone fireplaces and other various lost things. The huts they used are no longer there.
